An Update from Under the Heat Dome

John Elkington · 21 August 2026 · Leave a Comment

As ever, I have been covering a lot more of my own ongoing thinking and work on my Substack channel, Rewilding Markets, in recent months. But this video interview with Claire Scobie in Australia was a reminder of some of the things that have been happening but haven’t been making it onto Substack.

But some personal activities have made the cut. Examples include moth-spotting during a second visit to Westerlands on the Suxxes Downs and a Deep Time safari Gaia and undertook recently under the streets of our home city, London.

An unexpected surprise came when a hummingbird hawk moth found its way into our Barnes kitchen a week or so ago. It’s the first time we have seen one here in more than 50 years. I immediately wondered whether it had been attracted by the pickerel weed in our garden pond, which Gaia dug for us some years ago. And it turns out that it’s a favourite nectar source.

With the heat dome hitting Elaine hard, meanwhile, I have been spending a lot of time at home, writing and reading. And I have been working on the Green Paper, 2037: The Sustainability Outlook, that we (Volans, GlobeScan and ERM) will publish in October. The idea is that this, in turn, wil evolve into a White Paper, to be launched in January 2027 – as we enter the fifth decade of the era defined by the 1987 Brundtland Commission report, Our Common Future.

More anon, I suspect.

Introduction

I began this blog with an entry reporting on a visit to the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution on Cape Cod, on 30 September 2003. The blog element of the website has gone through several iterations since, with much of the older material still available.

Like so many things in my life, blog entries blur the boundaries between the personal and the professional. As explained on this site’s Home Page, the website and the blog are part platform for ongoing projects, part autobiography, and part accountability mechanism.

In addition, my blogs have appeared on many sites such as: Chinadialogue, CSRWire, Fast Company, GreenBiz, Guardian Sustainable Business, and the Harvard Business Review.
